Book Review: Glitter ( Glitter #1)- Aprilynne Pike

About The Book

Outside the palace of Versailles, it’s modern day. Inside, the people dress, eat, and act like it’s the eighteenth century—with the added bonus of technology to make court life lavish, privileged, and frivolous. The palace has every indulgence, but for one pretty young thing, it’s about to become a very beautiful prison.

When Danica witnesses an act of murder by the young king, her mother makes a cruel power play . . . blackmailing the king into making Dani his queen. When she turns eighteen, Dani will marry the most ruthless and dangerous man of the court. She has six months to escape her terrifying destiny. Six months to raise enough money to disappear into the real world beyond the palace gates.

Her ticket out? Glitter. A drug so powerful that a tiny pinch mixed into a pot of rouge or lip gloss can make the wearer hopelessly addicted. Addicted to a drug Dani can sell for more money than she ever dreamed.

But in Versailles, secrets are impossible to keep. And the most dangerous secret—falling for a drug dealer outside the palace walls—is one risk she has to take.

My Thoughts

The book cover for `Glitter` ( Glitter #1) by Aprilynne Pike, is beautiful to look at. The synopsis sounds really interesting.Glitter

I had a feeling I would be reading an out – of – my – comfort – zone novel so I dove into the book with no expectations at all. I wanted to be as open-minded as possible.

I enjoyed the first few chapters but then my interest from before wavered. The story became… dull, and in the end I had more question marks floating above my head than ever before.

But the main question had nothing to do with the story, per se. I had more of a tough time categorizing this special read into a specific genre. How do I recommend a book when I can´t even define the genre?

Technically, `Glitter` isn´t fantasy nor is it dystopian. It´s not historical, either. It´s not entirely Sci-fi but it´s futuristic with a dash of everything wrapped up in a young adult fancy package.

It sounds interesting but it´s hard to digest.

Politics and court intrigue set in the future where people dress in the late French Baroque fashion.

The writing was great but the story itself? Not my cup of tea. If I can´t relate to a character or fully understand and accept their trail of thoughts and / or justify their actions then a story doesn´t hold much worth for me.

The main character, Danica, wasn´t what I would call an interesting figure. There were so many things wrong with her. When you hit a point where you dislike a main character then it´s double hard to enjoy a story, no matter how good it is.

I´m going to be smart and say that the odd genre of this book and I weren´t a good match.

Would I recommend this book? Yeah. I can see others liking this type of read. It´s mash – up of Marie Antoinette and Breaking Bad.

Would I re-read this book? Probably not.

The Cover – 5 stars ( Stunning. Love the colors. A total eye catcher.)

The Story – 2 stars ( It wasn´t for me, although I tried. Too futuristic for my taste.)

The Characters – 2 stars ( Not likable.)

My emotional state after finishing this book – Indifferent.
