REVIEW- A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

Book Description

Feyre survived Amarantha’s clutches to return to the Spring Court—but at a steep cost. Though she now has the powers of the High Fae, her heart remains human, and it can’t forget the terrible deeds she performed to save Tamlin’s people.

Nor has Feyre forgotten her bargain with Rhysand, High Lord of the feared Night Court. As Feyre navigates its dark web of politics, passion, and dazzling power, a greater evil looms—and she might be key to stopping it. But only if she can harness her harrowing gifts, heal her fractured soul, and decide how she wishes to shape her future—and the future of a world cleaved in two.

With more than a million copies sold of her beloved Throne of Glass series, Sarah J. Maas’s masterful storytelling brings this second book in her seductive and action-packed series to new heights.

My Thoughts

After reading the publicly acclaimed „ EPIC“ novel `A Court of Thorns and Roses` I decided to go against my gut feeling and continue with book #2, `A Court of Mist and Fury` by the ( also ) publicly acclaimed genius Sarah J. Maas.

ACOMAF

Only this time, instead of making notes while reading the story ( as I would usually do )… I decided to take on a different approach and just read the damn story first. So, basically, I´ve had more than enough time to think about the story and sort out my thoughts.

A quick reminder: Review contains mild to major spoilers. If you hate spoilers then I advise you to come back after you read the book / series yourself.

* pushing glasses up my nose *

It all starts off with the tagline on the book cover.

“For love, she cheated death. For her world, she will become a weapon.”

Not bad, right? It would have been more awesome if she were a weapon at all.

Feyre ( Heroine ) turned into a Faerie, gaining all the powers from each Lord from the different Courts of Prythian. She was the ultimate weapon of destruction after her change. Or, she could have been.

Think of her as Captain Planet without green hair. But did she do anything to show off her powers? No. I mean- If I had so many magical abilities then you can get your ass I´d be outside testing them out and putting them to good use.

Feyre? Not so much. Actually, she did nothing of the sorts. The little powers that slipped from her here and again weren´t enough to display her as the ultimate Faerie.

That was a major disappointment. I expected flying ice daggers, fire pools, mind control, manipulating enemies, etc etc.

Another thing that bothered me beyond means was the fact that Tamlin ( the Hero from book #1) was turned into a villain.

Just because my husband doesn´t agree with me doesn´t make him the bad guy.

The Tamlin topic sends a warped message to it´s readers.

When the going get´s tough, leave. Tamlin and Feyre´s relationship after what had happened Under the Mountain was strained. Feyre felt empty and out of place and somehow she became depressed.

Apparently- Tamlin had some issues, himself, he had to deal with but wasn´t the type to openly work on those issues ( issues that aren´t really clarified). The minute he tries to keep Feyre safe is when she flips her top and leaves him….behind his back.

She´s escapes the evil Tamlin * snorts * and runs into the waiting arms of the Lord of the Night Court. Tamlin´s enemy / the most feared Lord of the country.

Call me old fashioned…but, Feyre could have given Tamlin time to sort his issues out. Maybe could´ve, should´ve considered helping him? But what do I know. * wave off * I´d probably be banished by the 2.0 Feminists for even thinking about staying with someone before leaving when times get rough. I´m all for leaving someone when there´s no reason to stay anymore….but a hit and run action? Leave when he´s gone without telling him? He didn´t do anything to make her leave. It was all on her. At least go with style. Call the relationship off.

Remember: Feyre went Under the Mountain to save the LOVE of her life. Quite a few chapters from book #1 were dedicated to the LOVE she had felt. She was determined to set him free and lift the curse and free all the other Faeries. Then the love was gone and it was Tamlin´s fault? Hahaha. Nice try, Miss Author.

After Feyre left the Spring Court she settled in nicely at the Night Court and learned to read and write ( something she could have also done at the Spring Court,,,just saying) and she faced her own issues with the help of Rhysand ( a.k.a Rhys, the new almighty Hero). He gave her the love, patience and crayons she needed in order to become the Faerie she needed to be.

To say I was disappointed would be an understatement.

Up until that point I was annoyed by the faults in the story.

And this made my blood boil.

bron
Meet Bron of Prythian. Distant cousin of Bronn, the sellsword of Westeros

All y´all Game of Thrones readers will know who Bronn is. Bronn´s da man. Seeing a Bron is reason enough to believe that the author´s thinking cap became too heavy and slipped, making her snatch another name from another successful story.

Back to the Faeries:

Feyre learned that the feared Night Court didn´t hold up to it´s reputation. Neither did it´s Lord, Rhysand. The bad ass, fearful Faerie was a soft kitty that purred quite alot. ( I´m not kidding )

And here´s a little something that might tickle you guys: His orgasms shake mountains. Literally. I asked my husband if his orgasms were powerful enough to knock over the trees from the nearby forest ( since we don´t live in a mountain area). His answer was a confused look.

Mid-evil sexting via paper and pen and a hint of magic was quite an amusing part of this story, though. I did get a kick out of that.

All jokes aside….

This book was long and stuffed with far too many descriptions. Too many details that killed the story for me. Too many events happening for no greater purpose.

There was no need to paint a character as a villain when his actions didn´t even make him one. There was no need for the author to constantly compare the Heros from book #1 and book #2.

„ Tamlin kept me locked up. Rhys gives me freedom.“

( note: that wasn´t the actual dialogue but it comes pretty close)

There was absolutely no need to give each sub-character a full background story.

The 624 pages could have easily been reduced down to 270 if the author would have ditched the many details ( details that didn´t enhance the story in any way ).

What I did like, though, was the end. I was surprised, myself, because after reading tons of unnecessary info, the end picked up and the author delivered quite an awesome scene. But not mind blowing enough for me to rave about it, though.

So, there were two things that this book focused on:

  • Rhys and Feyre´s relationship
  • War preparation

As I´ve said in my A Court of Thorns and Roses review, I can see why young adults would love this story. It´s your typical fantasy with dramatic moments that touch young ( and maybe older ) hearts.

I can see why others would go nuts over the characters because they´re full of….everything and nothing.

But was this book better than the first one? In a way- Yes. In other ways- It wasn´t.

I bet you´re asking yourselves why I’ve bothered to continue this story if I´m not liking it.

Well, the little hand written recommendation from the bookstore that was taped on the shelf underneath these books said that book 3 was amazing and a MUST READ. I´m waiting for a miracle to happen.

The Cover – 2 stars (The same as the first just a different color. I get that it´s better when books in a trilogy match but that blue….. Nope. Dull.)

The Story – 2 stars ( I have to admit that the author used her imagination a bit more for this story, but the added bits and detail- overload were so pointless. I say fire the editor.)

The Characters – 1,5 stars ( No growth, just a different Court with a different Lord. One I didn´t appreciate. Super powerful Feyre´s actions were disappointing. All the sub-characters had ( thanks to the heavy descriptions and details ) just as much of a say as the MC´s. The idea the author had of shoving the new Hero down my throat backfired. )

My Emotional State After Finishing This Read– Annoyed.

I´m giving `A Court of Mist and Fury` ( A Court of Thorns and Roses #2 ) by Sarah J. Maas 2 out of 5 stars.

Review- A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

Book Description

Feyre’s survival rests upon her ability to hunt and kill – the forest where she lives is a cold, bleak place in the long winter months. So when she spots a deer in the forest being pursued by a wolf, she cannot resist fighting it for the flesh. But to do so, she must kill the predator and killing something so precious comes at a price …

Dragged to a magical kingdom for the murder of a faerie, Feyre discovers that her captor, his face obscured by a jewelled mask, is hiding far more than his piercing green eyes would suggest. Feyre’s presence at the court is closely guarded, and as she begins to learn why, her feelings for him turn from hostility to passion and the faerie lands become an even more dangerous place. Feyre must fight to break an ancient curse, or she will lose him forever.

My Thoughts

I have two book titles for you.

Game of Thrones and The Hunger Games.

Add a hint of Breaking Dawn and a sprinkle of the Oscar line „ After all, tomorrow is another day.“ and you don´t have to read `A Court of Thorns and Roses`by the #1 NYT bestseller, Sarah J. Maas, anymore. a court of thorns and roses1

Now, brace yourselves. This is going to be a long review with minor to major spoilers. Shall you prefer not to be spoiled then I highly advise you to leave and come back after you read the story yourself.

For weeks I´ve had to look at the rather unflattering book cover of `A Court of Thorns and Roses` on Instagram. Every Insta-blogger insisted on getting on my last nerve with this book. With what reason? Because, D´uh…. it´s an awesome book ( so everyone said).

Someone needs to define the word `awesome` to me again because ( and I quote the brilliant comedian Dylan Moran )

`Mountains and rivers and the fact that I´m still breathing is awesome.`

This story? Not so much.

I´ve avoided this book for a very long time and succeeded in ignoring the Instagram features as well until one fine day….

I decided to go book shopping. Mind you- it´s one of my favorite pastime activities, even if I never walk out with a book, I still love to find out what´s new, etc.

I saw this.

ACOTAR1 blog
A “Must Read” recommendation from the bookstore employees.

This had me thinking.

I read at least one hundred online reviews, all outstanding and love gushing towards the story. I was nearly blinded by the million insta-feeds for this book….NOW I was seeing tiny, short book recommendations for the one book I´ve been avoiding for so long.

I must have looked like a lost, helpless fool because a sales woman walked right up to me and asked if I needed any help. I thought „ why not“ and asked her if the book was really as good as the recommendation stated.

15 minutes later I was exhausted and caved. I bought the book. An hour later I was at home and opened the book.

I, involuntarily, choked on my own gum.

A map…. of Westeros? Oh, for crying out loud. Really?

ACOTAR blog

Isn´t it funny how Prythian looks like Westeros. And Westeros looks like the UK.

But wait….this gets better. The UK lacks of something significant.

A wall. * faint * For anyone who has read or even heard of the great wall of Game of Thrones… it´s up north where there´s constant cold weather. The wall keeps the bad guys out.

The Wall 2
The Wall of Westeros

Now look at this and tell me the author wasn´t “inspired” by this idea.

The wall
The Wall of Prythian

Someone was not in a creative mood that day, huh?

Can you imagine how my mood shifted from suspicious to curious and then dropped to being annoyed? I hadn´t even started reading the dang book and already, I wanted to wrap it up in nice paper and gift it to my neighbor.

But I didn´t. Instead, I read the damn thing from start to finish.

And while I read I had quite a few discussions on the side with people who hadn´t read the book but who had read Game of Thrones and The Hunger Games. Screenshots were sent back and forth, comparing the names of the characters from both books, scenes from the books, etc.

For example:

A name from A Court of Thorns and Roses: Hyburn

A name from Game of Thrones: Qyburn

That and the map and the wall. I had a feeling the Wildlings from GoT were the humans from ACOTAR. Both parties bothered by what was beyond the wall until both realized there´s a mutual enemy who had to be dealt with. ( I JUST SPOILED THE PLOT)

If I thought my annoyance couldn´t get any worse, I was wrong.

But the story of ACOTAR shifted. My hopes for a unique story reappeared.

A poverty-stricken family, suffering for the next meal was introduced. Two sisters and their father, huddled in a beaten cottage waiting for the youngest family member, Feyre, to come home from hunting so they wouldn´t have to starve to death.

Not bad, right? I thought it was a nice change to read about a poor family struggling to survive.

What wasn´t so nice was- The characters. Although poor, Feyre´s family were spoiled little shits, whining after their long lost wealth and not accepting their future.

The beginning felt cold. It felt clinical. Emotionless.

Meeh. It was weird.

But things changed for the family after Feyre killed and skinned a wolf during her hunt. It was the one event that changed everyone´s lives forever.

Normally, in Game of Thrones, killing someone / something would result in being beheaded but in this one…. Feyre wasn´t executed for killing the wolf / Faerie ( yes, Faeries could shapeshift. Who would have thought, right? I didn´t know Faeries could bite like vampires, either, yet it happens in this one.). Instead, Feyre was given a choice. To go and live with the Faerie in the faerie land beyond the invisible wall or die on the spot.

Tough and easy choice if you ask me. Of course, Feyre walked into a new future. A future with food and probably share a nice fluffy bed with an elf Faerie, to pay for her crime. Without much of a fight Feyre left her hungry family behind and walked into a better future.

Fast forward- Feyre falls for the Faerie who took her and lives for months with him as his guest.

( Insert Disney´s Beauty and the Beast song, Be Our Guest )

She learned to love the lands she once so hated and was sent back due to highly confidential faerie business.

What a buzz kill, right? Fall in love after planning so many escapes and hiding knives and being 80% of the time bitchy… only to be told she needs to go back home. The hateful efforts all for nothing. * snorts *

But wait- before Feyre was sent on her way, the Faerie Lord, Tamlin ( the Hero ) took it upon himself to give her a few last minute shags before he patted her bottom and waved a white laced hanky after the carriage.

( Note: that wasn´t how it exactly happened. The truth- He screwed her for the first time after he announced she had to leave and then immediately sent her back home to the human world. How romantic. Lol) Still a buzz kill, and we´re only halfway through the story. There´s more to come.

Being back home wasn´t as great as Feyre had planned it would be. She loved the elf Faerie, High Fae, Lord of the Spring Court, Tamlin, and wanted to go back and help him face whatever threat was on it´s way to destroy her pretty Lord. Because it wasn´t enough to be the most powerful Fae in the lands of Fae. It wasn´t enough having the ability to turn into a wolfish beast with horns to slaughter the evil. It wasn´t enough to be more beautiful than Prince Charming himself. He was a lost cause when he was taken.

Now, this was the point where I got excited again. Feyre, the former huntress, was going to help her beloved Lord! Back at the faerie mansion she found it empty, shredded and ruined beyond words. Feyre was too late.

Fast forward again- After the old maid from the fluffy mansion gave the „stupid human“ the truth and directions to where Tamlin was being held as prisoner she sprinted off to a place hidden under a mountain where an evil woman ( who´s name WAS NOT TO BE OUTSPOKEN in the first half of the book) held all Fae lords and their folk captive.

This is where the Hunger Games come in. I swear to God…. when the hand was raised in tribute to the fallen I couldn´t help but laugh.

ACOTAR KATNIS

So, Game of Thrones, a spark of Harry P. Now Katniss Everdeen?

The big question is- Will Katniss Feyre be able to save the one she loves and free the people of Prythian? There´s a book #2 and a book #3. You can figure it out for yourselves.

I mentioned Bella Swan above, remember? Yeah, everything became so „clear“ towards the end. * snorts *

The bottom line- The book would have been so much more enjoyable had the author used her own imagination instead of picking the good bits from other successful stories. I know writers can´t really reinvent the wheel ( to always come up with new things to write about) but a little creativity wouldn´t have hurt. There were quite a few fine written scenes I hadn´t recognized from other books that I actually enjoyed. The rest was just eye roll worthy.

The characters were 2 dimensional. Flat. They had less feeling than I have when it´s time for my monthly strawberry week. There was potential, though. I saw all sorts of great things happening for each character when I started reading. They just never progressed. How am I supposed to feel anxious about certain characters when they´re all emotionless? It´s impossible.

And if I ever read another „ she clicked her tongue…“ I´m gonna file a complaint. One that´s longer and more alive and colorful than this review.

Speaking of writing- The writing was… okay. Not what I would expect from a fantasy story. With ease I read through 416 pages of head-scratch-worthy info. Took me 2 solid days and another few hours to process the clutter I read.

Still- I haven´t completely given up hope. Rumor has it that book #2 is so much better. So much sexier ( so they say. Although I didn´t see much sexy schmexy in this one, so… fingers crossed). So full of everything fabulous. I´d like to be the judge of that myself. I want to see if Feyre will time travel through the stones of Craigh na Dun and meet a hot Highlander named Damie. The possibilities are endless.

Despite my full rant I´m gonna go ahead and recommend this book. Why? Because I can see why so many people would love the story. If you haven´t read the books I´ve mentioned above then you might be able to enjoy the emotionless adventure ( if a reader doesn´t care for such important nonsense.)

I will say that if you ARE a fan of Game of Thrones or The Hunger games….stay away from this read.

I can see the appeal. But I don´t like it. It´s not for me. There are books out there that are more gripping with less obviously copied bits.

Would I reread this book? Probably not. I´ve got Game of Thrones and The Hunger Games on my shelves already.

The Cover – 2 stars ( It´s not my cup of tea. I find it dull.)

The Story – 2 stars ( If the author had added more of her own voice instead of others then it might have been a 4 star read. There was a hint of romance but the rest was full of Feyre´s hateful thoughts. )

The Characters – 2 stars ( Emotionless. 2D. Although each had alot to offer… nothing came through. A pity, really. But if I had to pick characters I enjoyed most it would be Tamlin and Lucien. I didn´t care much for Tamlin and Feyre as a couple. )

My emotional state after finishing this read- Confused. Worried I won´t get to see a fanfic in the other installment.

I´m giving `A Court of Thorns and Roses` ( A Court of Thorns and Roses #1) by Sarah J. Maas 2 out of 5 stars.

He is a shadow in the glittering world of the Equals, with mysterious powers no one else understands. But will he liberate—or destroy?

My Thoughts

It was through a dear friend of mine ( who also happens to be a writer ) when I first met author Vic James, writer of `Gilded Cage`. Our encounter was brief but Vic James left a positive impression and before she left for the evening she kindly handed out a promotional poster from her newest release. Mind you- I´ve never heard nor seen anything from Vic James before so the author and her work were completely new to me. All I was told was that I had to read her work. She´s a brilliant writer. Well, okay. If my friend says she´s brilliant then she probably is. ( I so hoped she was right.)

Even if I´m not huge on dystopian stories I really enjoyed this one.

In a nutshell, `Gilded Cage` is about inequality. A world devided into two parts- the aristocrats and the commoners. The aristocrats have magical powers and the commoners, who are just normal humans, have nothing magical but have to devote 10 years of their lives as slaves to the aristocrats. Those ten years were due anytime during a commoners lifespan. ( Totally interesting, right? I sure thought so.)

Outside a nutshell ´Gilded Cage´ is so much more. It´s exhilarating, gripping, powerful and magical. A total page turner. This is a read where you gladly do an over-nighter because you just HAVE to know how the story continues. ( Sleep is overrated anyways * wave off *)

A huge surprise for me was how I easily accepted the multiple POVs. I´m usually annoyed when a story has more than two POVs. Because, let´s face it- most multi-POVs in one story are unnecessary and / or just repetitive. That´s not the case in `Gilded Cage`. Each POV was mandatory and each contributed to the story. Just like it´s supposed to be.

I can´t really say if I have any complaints now because `Gilded Cage` is the first in a series and definitely the build-up story for what´s to come. By the feel of it- there´s going to be something huge happening in the next installment ( at least I hope there will be ).

Vic James is an icredible worldbuilder and storyteller. That alone is rare combination and I fully appreciate the authors talent because without her abilities… I would have died of boredom ( that´s not really true, I would have slept. Lol )

I fully recommend `Gilded Cage´ to anyone who loves themselves a great dystopian story with lots of everything any YA reader craves.

The Cover – 5 stars ( I am so in LOVE with the cover. It´s an eye catcher )

The Story – 4 stars ( I´m not a big fan of dystopian stories but this is definitely worth it. There´s romance, corruption, Good vs. Evil, suspense and a whole lot of nail bite worthy scenes.)

The Characters – 4 stars ( I see book #1 as a build-up and because of that I thought the characters were pretty good. Very interesting, very clever and strong. Definitely interested in getting to know them more. )

My emotional state after finishing this read – I´m anxious to continue the story. Roll on book #2… I´m not getting any younger!!

I´m giving `Gilded Cage` ( Dark Gifts #1 ), by Vic James, 4 out of 5 stars.

Enjoy! xx

My Thoughts

Picking out a story to read on Wattpad comes pretty close to window shopping. You spend so many hours on the hunt for that special somthing to wear / read until you actually find what you´re looking for. Only books are a bit like russian roulette.

It wasn´t the cover that grabbed my attention- It was the title. And the Meek Shall Walk“ by Shaun Allan… what a brilliant read. 100% unpredictable, 100% captivating and oh-so off the charts cool. In all honestly- how often does one read about a mermaid who collects body parts from humans?

ariel

The story is basically a retell of the classic „The Little Mermaid“ written by Hans Christian Andersen ( Don´t even attempt to think about the Disney version ) … only Shaun Allan´s version is a little vicious and more shocking with lots of surprises.

Stories that have the ability to surprise a reader are the best! And with „And the Meek Shall Walk“ it felt like I was exploring a whole new territory filled with loads of awesomeness. A beautiful darkness I wished would never end.

Now- the end was something that completely threw me off. I wasn´t expecting what happened. Even the epilogue felt like a loved one was stabbing me in the heart with a smile in their face. Quite bittersweet but still amazing.

mermaids

A fully recommendable story for anyone who loves themselves some great writing, great characters, and an end that will leave a reader stunned.

The Cover – 5 stars ( I´m a huge fan of simplicity. The cover image is perfect. A total eye catcher)

The Story – 5 stars ( a little horror here, a tad romance there, the element of surprise, twist of events…. An absolute fabulous story )

The Characters – 5 stars ( Although all were wonderful in their own way I have to say Aren was my favorite. The transformation her character went through was fantastic. At first vicious, then kind, then life happened…. * sigh * )

My emotional state after finishing this readcompletely satisfied. A true fairytale that will stick with me for a while.

I´m giving `And the Meek Shall Walk` by Shaun Allan 5 out of 5 stars

*** Spoiler free Review ***

My Thoughts

`The Lost` is the second installment in The Whitechapel Chronicles. And since author Lindsey Clarke has not once disappointed me I just knew the second part of the dark vampire tale was going to blow my mind. And I was right. I thought `Playing Dead` ( book #1 ) was genius….

I won´t waste anyone´s time giving my own description of the story because I completely lack that skill ( in other words- I suck at it ). I will, however, say one thing- Lindsey Clarke is AMAZEBALLS. `The Lost` is flipping brilliant!

The story:

Megan, Harper and Brandon´s story continues and the path they take is unexpected and far from easy ( emotionally and physically ).

lost-quote

After the events in `Playing Dead` I never thought Megan could be confronted with anything worse. I mean- turning into a vampire and finding out your husbands fury secret is tough, but not as tough as what happens in this part of the story.

New characters are introduced, challenging Megan and Harper and the entire vampire race. The obstacles become more and more challenging. The characters thread into more unknown territories.
A lot is at stake. Are the characters up for saving the world as it´s known? Will Megan find the answers to her questions? Will she ever see the light in the never ending dark tunnel?

I cannot being to tell you how extremely nail-bite-worthy `The Lost` is ( in fact- I´d probably end up writing a full novel explaining every awesome detail about this story, so best I don´t start.).

What´s extremely noticable is how much Megan´s character has grown. The Megan from the beginning is long gone and is replaced by a curious, head strong woman who knows what she wants and won´t stop for anything to get what she needs… even if that means going against Harper.

lost-quote2

With `The Lost` being the second book in the series, one would think that this is a bridge to the grande final. It isn´t. `The Lost ` feels like a warm up story, getting ready to blow a reader´s mind.

My mind has been blown away already and there´s still `Savage Wings` ( book #3 ).

If it were up to me, this story would never end.

The Cover- 5 stars ( It fits perfectly with the first cover. The coloring is fab and catchy. ❤ )

The Story – 5 stars ( I´m not sure my heart can handle more. But it has to, damn it! Extremely well thought through story. LOVE IT! )

The Characters – 5 stars ( The author has an evil side. She creates characters you want to take home with you and then does the unthinkable to them. I guarantee- you will want a Harper Cain, a Brandon and even a Garrick. You´ll want a Josiah, a Fenton… all at your beck and call.)

My emotional state after finishing `The Lost`– Drained in the best possible way ever. Totally satisfied but afraid to continue at the same time.

I´m giving `The Lost` ( The Whitechapel Chronicles #2 ) by author Lindsey Clarke 5 out of 5 stars

My Thoughts

`Cupid´s Match` by L. E. Palphreyman is plain and simply cute. I never expected to love this story as much as I do. This might be my favorite Young Adult / fantasy story 2016!

There are quite a few Cupid stories on Wattpad but not one I´ve read ( so far ) was as fun as this version of Cupid.

A total page-turner!

The intro was so darn catchy I couldn´t put this story down. How do you avoid your own match? Ha. You don´t.

Lila had no intention of being anyones match unless it was her own boyfriend. But after receiving numerous letters from The Cupids Matchmaking Service she decided to end the harrassment and tell the 3,000 year old business that she wanted her name scratched off their contact list since she never signed up for anything.

It was their mistake, right? Little did Lila know that the love matching company didn´t make a mistake. She was, by all that´s pink and fluffy, someone elses match. Someone Lila never thought actually existed. Someone who wasn´t supposed to be matched- let alone with a human. That certain someone wasn´t supposed to be on the list to begin with. It was against the company policy / the law. Yet, the match was inevitable.

I will stop right there because I´d hate to spoil the story for you. Just know that we´re dealing with a gorgeous God, a frightening Venus and, of course, LOVE.

What I liked alot about this story was that it wasn´t a overly sappy lovestory. There were problems around every corner. People… or better… Cupids from all over were trying to prevent love from happening. I enjoyed the cat and mouse chase and above all- Venus. It was awesome to read about Gods that bring love and desire and then reading about Venus * shiver *. Her role was not what I expected yet I totally welcomed the psycho behavior from the Goddess of love and beauty.

A fully recommendable read! `Cupid´s Match` is one of those stories you can´t put down.

The Cover- 5 stars ( I LOVE the simplicity of this cover. Love, love, L.O.V.E it.)

The Characters – 5 stars ( Great characters. From Lila to Cupid to Cal to Charlie…. even Venus… all were fantastic!)

The Story- 5 stars ( It´s a story well written and told. Totally catchy, exciting, and way cool )

My emotional state after finishing this story- I felt like the author hit me with one of Cupids arrows.

I´m giving `Cupid`s Match` by author L. E. Palphreyman 5 out of 5 stars

Bite the Bullet ( Vampire Cohorts #1) – Angela Louise McGurk

Book Description

Let me tell you what it was to be made vampire. It wasn’t birth. Birth implies pushing, tearing forth into the light, screaming. Becoming immortal was to be pulled, to be tugged irrevocably into darkness, and it was silent.

I should have fought, any person should fight, but my mind had been filled with a hazy calm which forbade any battle. Struggling had been the last thing on my mind, even when my bus arrived and my assailant waved it on, dismissing my last hope of escape.

Yet my lack of rebellion was far from the most unsettling part of the stranger’s control over me. The truth was that the man could’ve asked anything of me and I would’ve complied, but he didn’t need to vocalise his request. I knew instinctively what he wanted. I sighed and surrendered myself as he held me against his front in a lover’s embrace, tipping my head and willingly giving him access to my throat.

One day you’ll understand,” he whispered, his tone subdued. I’ve often wondered since if he was really talking to me. Perhaps he’d been talking to himself, persuading himself that one day I’d know and accept his reasons for what he’d planned for me.

I wouldn’t. I couldn’t. Because when my fangs came in, my world altered irrevocably. It became somewhere dark, somewhere filled with murder and blood, where magic was sinister and where even my closest ally seemed more like an enemy… Even if he did make my heart skip a beat.

My Thoughts

Bite The Bullet: Vampire Cohorts Book 1 is the first installment in Angela McGurk´s vampire series. Angela McGurk is a Wattpad writer who went into selfpublishing.

This was my first time around with this writer and I was positively surprised.  After seeing the cover all over social media and hearing fabulous things about the story / characters I thought it´d give it a go.

The writing style was fun and the story was exciting. I mean- it isn´t every day I come across a vampire story that´s THAT seductive and gripping.

The story starts with Darcy ( Heroine ) realizing her life has been turned upside-down and is forced to live a new life she never wanted to be apart of. Darcy´s struggle to accept who, or what she turned into was well described and interesting. Especially when she was introduced to the man who was responsible for her change. Conn. Page after page a reader slowly finds out how Darcy copes with what was forced upon her and discovers ugly truths about her life along the way. Facts she never thought could be true to begin with.

It was a nice tale with lots of DRAMA ( a fine understatement ), that much I can say. Alot of scenes were predictable, but that didn´t bother me at all since the core of the story was good. The dialogue was sharp and quick ( often too quick ).

The characters in this book were very straight-forward and strong. Darcy was the typical strong-headed Heroine who didn´t put up with anything…and Conn ( the Sire of the Vamp group) was the typical God-like worrior / beautiful as hell Hero.

It was nice to read about a romance with a struggle ( Should Darcy love Conn? Should Conn let himself fall for Darcy? Should they, should they not? Will they have a future together, or will they go separate ways still feeling an unbelievable attraction to one another?)
As you can see…..this book is your everyday romance just with vampires.

What I didn´t like so much was Darcy´s attitude. Sure- she was a strong character but she was also very tiresome, provocative and irritating. I´m not sure if the author wanted Darcy´s character to be exactly like that or if that sort of character was the author’s idea of a fantastic Heroine.

There´s so much to write about this book and not enough time to explain each and every event. All I will and can say is that Bite The Bullet was cool and exciting ( Except for Darcy. She wasn´t cool.)

The cover – 3 stars ( It´s not bad, it´s just nothing near what I prefer.)

The story – 4 stars ( Good storytelling. )

The characters – 3 stars ( It seemed like the characters were only out to diss each other all the time. Too many quick comebacks that felt unnecessary)

My emotional state after finishing this book – Okay. Not thrilled nor disappointed.

All in all a recommendable read. A must have for every vampire lover.

I give `Bite The Bullet`( book #1) by Angela Louise McGurk 3 out of 5 stars.

NOTE- Bite the Bullet is not available as a completed novel on Wattpad anymore. If you want to read book #1 you must purchase it through Amazon.com ( and / or other ). Book #2-#6 are currently available as completed stories on Wattpad.

Mermaids and the Vampires Who Love Them – Brittanie Charmintine

Book Description

“Everyone knows mermaid blood is like vampire crack …” Right before her senior year, mermaid Waverly Marie Fishwater’s parents inform her they’re moving to the Bay Area in Northern California. She’s to attend a cross-cultural experimental high school. The major problem is that it’s a vampire school, and mermaid blood is their favorite snack!

**A WATTYS 2014 AWARD WINNING STORY**

My Thoughts

Mermaids and vampires? Does that even work in a book? I can tell you- It´s possible. I couldn´t believe it myself. `Mermaids and the Vampires Who Love Them` by author Brittanie Charmintine is a breath of fresh air! I´ve read so many books from all kinds of genres and NEVER have I come across a story as unique and as compelling as this one. ( still amazed by how mermaids and vampires worked together )

After the eye-catcher cover I read the book description. I´ll be honest here- I had no clue what to think of what I saw. A beautiful cover, a title that said so much yet not enough, and then the description. Hmm. The fact that the book had won an award AND that it´s currently #2 in the Wattpad Vampire rankings did finalize my decision to read this story.

Let me just say – WOW! . From the beginning to the last page- EVERYTHING was exciting. The characters, the storyline, the details…. all sent me on a ride I will never forget.

Although this was more a Young Adult novel I enjoyed it immensely.

This story had so much to offer ( and SO much more ). To say I was surprised about the Vampires and Mermaids is an understatement- This author packed some more mythical figures into the mix which made this story one huge colorful piece of enjoyment. Are you looking for fairies in a story? Or maybe a werewolf? Hof about greek Gods? Search no more, they´re all in this book and make a wonderful lot.

What I loved most about `Mermaids and the Vampires who Love Them` was that there never was a slow moment. If it wasn´t Waverly doing something spectacular it was another character, showing their abilities and adding using them at the cross-cultural high school.

This was an exciting read that will most definitely make my „Top 10 List Of Awesome Reads“. A magical, mythical, lovable story about new beginnings, lies, truths, friendship, loyalty, and of course, love.

Highly recommendable. YOU CANNOT MISS OUT ON THIS BOOK!

Cover- 5 stars ( it´sblue. I love blue. And a mermaids tail/ fin. Does this cover need more?)

Characters – 5 stars ( Wave, Pierce, Cupid & co. made my nights. Can´t ask for more.)

Story – 5 stars ( spectacular story telling. An AWESOME Young Adult read. Colorful storytelling…need I say more?)

My emotional state after reading this bookecstatic! Ready to dive into an ocean and fight off Sharks! 🙂

5 out of 5 splashing stars for Mermaids and the Vampires who Love Them, by the talented Brittanie Charmintine.

The Lady In The Tower – Debbie Goelz (Wattpad Short Story)

Short Story Description

What happens when a lawyer travels into a fairy tale and meets a sexy prince, cranky dragons and a psycho nymph? For Round Four of the Romance Smackdown – A Tale of Departures.

My Thoughts

A Fairytale gone OVERBOARD!

I love Debbie Goelz to bits! „The Lady in the Tower“ is a fascinating, creative and intelligent story that had me smiling for days after reading!

I have to be honest- I had no clue what I was getting myself into when I started reading. The story started out interesting and after the dragons came into the picture I just couldn´t help myself. I woke the evil, snoring dragon who lays by my side at night because I laughed so hard.

Loved the dragons, loved the nymph, loved the prince…. Meeh, * wave off * I loved everything about this story- even the AHA! Moment. It´s simple storytelling done in a brilliant way.

This is what storytelling is all about, folks. It´s about letting your imagination run wild and that is what this writer has done.

Debbie Goelz has a beautiful, colorful imagination and I couldn´t be more happy that I found her stories on Wattpad.

I´m giving „The Lady in the Tower“ 5 out of 5 stars.

A Discovery of Witches – Deborah Harkness

Book Description

A richly inventive novel about a centuries-old vampire, a spellbound witch, and the mysterious manuscript that draws them together.

Deep in the stacks of Oxford’s Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library. Diana has stumbled upon a coveted treasure lost for centuries-and she is the only creature who can break its spell.

Debut novelist Deborah Harkness has crafted a mesmerizing and addictive read, equal parts history and magic, romance and suspense. Diana is a bold heroine who meets her equal in vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont, and gradually warms up to him as their alliance deepens into an intimacy that violates age-old taboos. This smart, sophisticated story harks back to the novels of Anne Rice, but it is as contemporary and sensual as the Twilight series-with an extra serving of historical realism.

My Thoughts

While I was on my nightly search for „Books similar to Outlander“ I finally came across `A Discovery of Witches` by Deborah Harkness. To be honest- I wasn´t sure if I should even put this one on my mile long TBR list or not. But I´m more than happy I did.

They said this series could be compared to Outlander… They said this story had a touch of Twilight in it… but they ( whoever „they“ are ) weren´t right. `A Discovery of Witches was just as fabulous as Outlander and far better than Twilight- or at least far more interesting and mature.

To make a long fangirling session short: I loved this book. Everything I could ever ask for in a story was in this great read.

  • Top notch romance

  • great character development

  • tons of emotions

  • life threatening events

  • magic

  • historical facts

I have absolutely nothing to nag about. I hardly come across a book that´s so wonderful and full of life like `A Discovery of Witches`.

The story about Diana and Matthew will take a reader on an exciting and adventurous journey and will capture any readers heart from the start.

A witch and a vampire?

Normally, I´m not so huge on paranormal stories. I´ll read books that include vampires and I´ve enjoyed a few, but this one was the best so far. Although the main characters are a witch and a vampire I couldn´t help but feel like they were just normal, everyday people trying to survive life. They obviously weren´t. They were 2 creatures who fought to keep their species a secret AND trying hard to find a book that holds the key to every creatures existence.

On the Hunt for an Existing / Non- Existent Book.

During her research, Diana stumbles upon an unusual book. And ever since she´s opened and shut the ancient volume vampires, witches and daemons start showing alot of interest in Diana, especially Matthew, the mysterious vampire. What was in the book that was so important to the other creatures and why were they all of the sudden invading her personal space when they´ve never done that before? And why can´t she stay away from Matthew when she knows better not to get involved with his kind?

There was SO much to take in while reading this book but it SO worth it. What got me most was the slow growing relationship between Diana and Matthew and how both dealt with their struggle to

  1. stay alive

  2. fight whoever meant them harm

  3. finding themselves individually

  4. find answers to their very existence

along the way. When Diana and Matthew reach the point where they realize they can´t really stay away from each other things get more interesting and much more dangerous for them and those around them.

I´ll tell you this- their relationship takes a reader on a whole new romantic level. There´s nothing sappy or overly lovey-dovey in this story…it´s just…deep and meaningful. Diana and Matthew share something rare and powerful and it nearly knocked me out of my knickers.

I would love nothing more than to go into MORE details but I can´t. Not without giving anything major away. There´s so much information in this one that I simply don´t know where to start and what to leave out. Just take my word for it- You´ll love this book. A highly recommendable read.

The Cover- 5 stars ( I´m a huge fan of covers WITHOUT faces or bodies- it leaves more to the imagination)

The Story- 5 magical stars ( chewing on my own fingernails while reading 720 pages…THAT hardly happens. )

The Characters- 5 stars ( Jamie Fraser- there´s cometition in the house! His name is Matthew Clairmont! And Diana….that woman gets to be my fictional BFF!)

My emotional state after finishing this book – excited! I wanted to be a witch and a vampire!

I´m giving `A Discovery of Witches` ( book 1 All Souls Trilogy) by Deborah Harkness 5 out of 5 stars.
