Book Review: Eight Goodbyes, Christine Brae

synopsis single

When Tessa Talman meets Simon Fremont for the first time, not only is she attracted to him, she’s intrigued by how different their lives are. He’s a dedicated scientist, practical, pragmatic, and grounded—while she’s a head-in-the-clouds romance author. As their relationship grows, they agree to meet in places around the world, while continuing to live on opposite sides of the globe.

Though their feelings for each other deepen, their priorities remain the same. Simon is in a hurry to be financially sound and settle down, but Tessa is enjoying her freedom and newfound success. Neither is willing to give in, but as each goodbye gets harder, Tessa begins to wonder whether fame is the path to happiness, or if she has everything she needs in Simon.

Just as Tessa finds the courage to go after her own happily ever after, the unthinkable happens, separating them in ways they never imagined.

To move forward, she must let go of the past, and determine once and for all if love is truly more powerful than the pain of goodbye.

My Thoughts 2

**ARC kindly provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review**

`Eight Goodbyes` by author Christine Brae is a heartstrings tugging romance that will push all the right emotional buttons… Or, at least I hope that happens for readers when they pick this read.

Sadly enough, I have mixed feelings regarding this romance. I´m not totally against this book but I´m also not able to lay my heart on the table and profess my undying love for `Eight Goodbyes`Eight Goodbyes

Let me explain why.

The cover and book title caught my attention. The synopsis then sealed the deal for me. Everything seemed interesting and I was hopeful that I had found a new author to add to my ever-growing list of favorite writers.

With that being said- My excitement wasn´t long lasting. To express my mixed feelings a little better let be start off with mentioning what I fully appreciated about this book.

The writing.

The author has the ability to grab a reader´s attention with her words. A nice soft, feminine writing that´s perfect for an emotional read. Loved it.

Unfortunately, the writing , alone, doesn´t cut it for me.

While the synopsis sounded interesting, the story itself wasn´t as gripping. `Eight Goodbyes`. Yes. Somewhere deep down I understood this book was about saying goodbye 8 times. No surprises there. What I didn´t know was how annoying the goodbyes would be for me.

Tessa Tamlan, famous fiction author, lives the dream.

Here is where I felt a strong case of „The protagonist is the author´s self- insert“.

While most of us readers tend to believe being an author is all fun and games, Christine Brae gives us a little insight on how that´s not true through the eyes of Tessa Tamlan. In fact- The detailed mention of how exhausting and time-consuming an author´s life is feels a little too realistic.

This is pure speculation on my part but sometimes a reader can tell if there´s a self – insert. I felt it and I didn´t like it.

Nonetheless- Tessa´s character rubbed me the wrong way on many levels. She came across as arrogant, self-centered, aloof and superficial. A stark contrast to the Hero, Simon Fremont., who I enjoyed to bits.

As for the romance in the story – I had difficulties warming up to Tessa and Simon, as a couple. It took 5 chapters to lose all sympathy for the off-putting Tessa and 5 chapters to see that Simon deserved someone better. So, all the romantic feels I was supposed to feel were non-existent for me because I couldn´t connect with the Hero and Heroine.

Another aspect that made me raise my eyebrows: Tessa liked to mention how intelligent Simon and herself were. It´s a compliment when it´s mentioned once. It´s weird when it´s mentioned more than once.

The `good-byes` frustrated me. The Heroine was unlikable. The story wasn´t my cup of tea. Still…..

Would I recommend this book? For readers who rely on my opinion- No.

Would I reread this book? No.

The cover – 5 stars ( I´m usually not a fan of character images on covers but I did like this one.)

The Story – 2 stars ( The idea is great. The way the story panned out- Not so great )

The Characters – 2 ( Tessa did not work for me. Simon felt like the better character )

My emotional state after finishing this read – Frustrated.

2 stars

Book Review: A Crack In Everything – L. H. Cosway

Synopsis

Life used to be simple.

I was a city girl with humble dreams. Then Dylan O’Dea broke into my flat, held me against the wall and told me to stay quiet.
It was like in the movies, where the universe zeros in on a single scene. I looked into his eyes and knew he was going to change me.

For Dylan, the sky was always falling. He showed me how our world is a contradiction of beauty and ugliness. How we choose to ignore the awful and gloss over it with the palatable. How you need just a tiny drop of something unsavoury to create every great scent.

Pretty deep for a pair of teenagers living in a block of council flats in inner city Dublin, right? Probably. But we weren’t typical. We both had our obsessions. Mine was growing things, Dylan’s was scent. He taught me how to use my nose, and I introduced him to the magic of flowers.

I had no idea that one day he’d build an empire from what we started together. But before that, there was love and happiness, tragedy and epic heartbreak…

My name is Evelyn Flynn and I’m going to tell you about the crack in everything.

A Crack in Everything is Book #1 in L.H. Cosway’s Cracks duet.

My Thoughts

I had a chat the other night with an author about what´s new in the book world.

From the looks of it, I had been missing out, big time.

„You´ve never read a book from L. H. Cosway?!“ She asked.

I didn´t want to admit that I had no clue who L. H. Cosway was nor have I ever heard of her books before. And that´s a shame, really because now I can beat myself up for not finding out much sooner about this fantastic author!

I used my spying time to do some massive research. That´s when I spotted this beauty.

A Crack In Everything

`A Crack In Everything“ by author L. H. Cosway. Honestly- the cover is something beautiful and the title…. There was never a title that had ever described my life as well as this one had.

A Crack In Everything- That pretty much sums up the story of my life. Four simple words.

I had to have this book! Like- yesterday!

I started. I finished. I came to one conclusion….

This is what I would definitely call a picture perfect, dreamy romance.

Not in a cheesy way, mind you. This is a romance packed with hardships and love. With set-backs and growth. But above all- with love.

As us bloggers like to say – This book has the whole package.

There are the emotional ups and downs, the nail-biting guarantee, the swooning, the angst that romances MUST have….Great storytelling and easy reading. I really have nothing to complain about.

`A Crack In Everything` is an interesting, a heart – string – tugging, a breathtaking romance no one should miss out on!

I´m definitely buying the second installment, `How The Light Gets In` ( Cracks Duet #2).

Would I recommend this book? Yes. Yes yes yes yes, YES!

Would I re-read this book? I most certainly would!

The Cover – 5 stars ( I love the colors. Love the art work. And I just fancy the title so much I might even get that printed on a poster.)

The Story – 5 stars ( It´s a great change of wallpaper for me. Not my typical romance and I couldn´t be more happy about that fact. )

The Characters – 5 stars ( Omg. Dylan and Evelyn… What a perfect match! Great figures. Great chemistry.)

My emotional state after finishing this read – So hyped! I have a new favorite author!

5 stars

Book Review: Forgetting You, Forgetting Me – Monica James

Synopsis

My name is Lucy Tucker, and my life…it was perfect.

I worked the dream job. I had the most incredible family and friends. My home, Whispering Willows, a ranch in Montana, was everything I could ever wish for. My adoring fiancé, Samuel Stone, loved me unconditionally.

I had everything a girl could ever want.

But one fateful event shattered my perfect life. It’s unimaginable how simple, ordinary words can change a person’s life forever. For me those words were, “There’s been an accident.”

I thought Sam was my forever, but that forever came to a close the day Saxon Stone, Sam’s identical twin brother, came back. Saxon returned to Montana to help save Sam, however, the moment he entered my life, he turned my world upside down. But through chaos I somehow found clarity—clarity of who I was meant to be.

As time progressed, as seasons changed, and as a fire began to burn, I soon realized that Saxon was there for another reason…he was there to help save me.

My Thoughts

Once again, Monica James has done it again!

`Forgetting You, Forgetting Me` is an alluring and unforgettable romance that will send your heart flying sky-high!

What I appreciate most about this author is that none of her stories are ever the same. Some authors concentrate on Heroines who bring Heroes to their knees. Some authors focus on the typical romantic cat and mouse games. But Monica James delivers unique romances that just go deep.forgetting you forgetting me

I´m in love.

`Forgetting You, Forgetting Me` is kind of / sort of / maybe a little like an indirect love triangle but with a greater, more emotional reason. The story is everything I could ever ask for but nothing what I expected in the beginning. It´s just NOT what you would expect. Trust me on that.

The romance is devastating and a slow burn. It´s a level 9 on the angst chart. It´s a heartbreak only Monica James can create.

I´m 100% positive the author lives off of the anxiety her readers have when they read her stories or else she wouldn´t put her readers through such emotional messes with her writing. THAT is how fab her stories are. THAT is how fab `Forgetting You, Forgetting Me` is.

A page turner that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to the very last page.

Would I recommend this book? Of course! This isn´t just a must – have for Monica James fans…It´s a MUST – HAVE for anyone who loves a beautiful, heartbreaking romance.

Would I re-read this book? You can bet your sugar bum on it!

The Cover – 5 stars ( An absolute winner for me. No faces. Just a hint of what´s inside the book.)

The Story 5 stars ( It´s hard to mention anything without spoiling so I´ll just say that it´s worth every minute / hour / day spent reading.)

The Characters – 5 stars ( Oh, how my heart broke for the Heroine. Oh, how my heart beat wildly for Sam and Saxon. All well established characters. Can I just say that I love them?!)

My emotional state after finishing this read – Exhausted, but in a good way. This is a guarantee book hanger type of book. Be prepared.

Also, be double prepared because book #2, Forgetting You, Remembering Me, is out NOW!

Book Review: Still Me ( Me Before You #3) – Jojo Moyes

Synopsis

Louisa Clark arrives in New York ready to start a new life, confident that she can embrace this new adventure and keep her relationship with Ambulance Sam alive across several thousand miles. She steps into the world of the superrich, working for Leonard Gopnik and his much younger second wife, Agnes. Lou is determined to get the most out of the experience and throws herself into her new job and New York life.

As she begins to mix in New York high society, Lou meets Joshua Ryan, a man who brings with him a whisper of her past. Before long, Lou finds herself torn between Fifth Avenue where she works and the treasure-filled vintage clothing store where she actually feels at home. And when matters come to a head, she has to ask herself: Who is Louisa Clark? And how do you reconcile a heart that lives in two places?

Funny, romantic, and poignant, Still Me follows Lou as she navigates how to stay true to herself, while pushing to live boldly in her brave new world.

My Thoughts

I´ll say this once. I´ll say this twice or as many times as I please- Louisa Clarke is my all time favorite book heroine!

I´ve had the pleasure of accompanying Lou on her journey through 3 books. I can´t really say that I´ve had enough.still me

I want more!

A reader meets Louisa in `Me Before You` ( book #1) who temporarily takes care of a paralyzed Will Traynor. `Me Before You` ruined me beyond words.

In book #2, `Me After You` we meet Louisa again, only she´s filled with grief  and can´t seem to find a way out of her pain after Will´s death. Then she meets someone new. Sam. `Me Before You` was another tear-jerker.

In `Still Me` a reader finally get´s to see the wonderful Lou finally step foot into life and explore the unknown!

It was a joy reading about Louisa finding herself… Because that´s that this book is about.

With who Louisa will start / end her journey is not my story to tell, neither am I going to say what the quirky, good-natured Louisa goes through while on her self finding trip.

It´s emotional. It´s thoughtful. It´s reality smacking someone in the face and guiding them to a happy place.

I loved this `Still Me` just as much as I loved `Me Before You` and `Me After You ` . Even if `Still Me` didn´t make me cry or leave me with a nasty book hangover… I still enjoyed reading the book.

Would I recommend this book? Yes yes YES!

Would I re-read this book? I´m not sure. This isn´t really something I would pick for a re-read. I´d much rather like for the story to continue.

The Cover – 5 stars ( This is a dream book cover for me.)

The Story – 5 stars ( There wasn´t anything exceptionally mind-blow-worthy about this book but it was still a great read.)

The Characters – 5 stars ( I seriously think Louisa Clarke is all the magic. You just can´t help but fall in love with her kindness. Without her the story would be half as good. I also think it´s safe to say that Sam doesn´t come close to Will. His relationship with Lou seems unfitting at first but in this book he grew on me. They were a great match. Lou, the sunshine of the year and Sam, the less emotional type.)

My emotional state after finishing this read – Utterly satisfied.

I´m giving `Still Me` ( Me Before You #3) by Jojo Moyes 5 out of 5 stars

Happy Mug Day!💛🤓📖☕ See that mug? I bought it because my youngest daughter makes the same face (the exact SAME FACE) when she wants something. 😂 Funnily enough, the mug mirrors my exact feeling towards this book. 😉💛🐝 I had to do a quick shot because my daughter DEMANDED to know WHY I was using her mug ( unlady-like snorts). If you haven't read Me Before You, After You and Still Me then I highly recommend you start reading. I just 💛 Louisa Clark! Have a great day! Mug Feature & Book Talk & Private Ramblings

Mug –Ikea

Book – Dangerous To Know & Love by Jane Harvey-Berrick

I´m a person who´s mind runs a million miles per hour. I´m not much of a multitasker but I can think of many odd things all at once. I´ve been told it´s an Aquarius trait. Not that I would know. I don´t pay attention to star signs, zodiac readings or whatever else they´re called. I know my mind runs off while I´m doing stuff. A fact I can live with.

Monday and Wednesday´s are my days off. The girls are at my mom´s enjoying their beloved Grandma-time so that leaves me with nothing to do. Literally. With the house clean, laundry done and lunch cooked I have all the time in the world ( 4 hours to myself feel like an endless amount of time) to do the things I enjoy most.

Call me weird but… I like doing nothing. We live in a fast living world where everyone´s running from A to B all the time. There´s hardly any room during our busy lives to properly relax. Unless we make time. That´s what I do. I make a point out of doing nothing sometimes. Why? It´s important for the mind and body.

In my case, I like to read and drink hot chocolate during my relax time. I like to aimlessly walk around the house in my hot pink bathrobe and just appreciate the silence. I´ll sometimes look out the kitchen window and watch my neighbors chat on the street, I´ll watch others pass by my house with their dogs.. I swear, there´s nothing better than having enough time to appreciate the little things in life.

While sipping my hot cocoa I took an extra few minutes to admire the color of the mug. Speaking of mugs- An Ikea purchase ( because I can never walk out of that place without something from the Dining department). Was the color turquoise? Blue? Teal? Then I thought of how great it would be if a book cover had that same color. The search for the matching book cover began.

It took me a full hour of rummaging to find what I was looking for. Voila!

WP Mug Turquoise
Book- Dangerous To Know & Love by Jane Harvey-Berrick

Okay, fine. Black, white and gray dominate the cover but there is a color splash of teal.

One of my all time favorite romances. And it´s an older one, too. Not one of those new romances where the Hero is some rich hot-shot who owns half a city and whisks a middle class 20-year-old off her feet with outrageous sex.

No. This is a simple, relatable romance. It´s emotional. I love it. `Dangerous To Know & Love` is one of those stories where you feel the character´s pain and just want to do everything to jump right in and help out. I remember I felt like a peeping Tom while reading Lisanne and Daniel´s story.  They had a slow-moving relationship with relatable up´s and down´s.  I didn´t really suffer from any emotional trauma after reading this book but I do remember feeling so utterly satisfied and excited.

There aren´t many books I cherish. I have a handful of books I call my romance Bible. This book definitely belongs to those.

Two hot cocoa´s later I realized I was rereading the book. Something I wasn´t planning on doing because I have more than enough books on my oversized TBR list. Books that are anxiously waiting for some attention.

I guess swooning over Daniel and Lisanne´s lovestory was more important. I have time, right? My TBR list isn´t going anywhere. A quick reread and another hot cocoa can never hurt… Especially not me. 🙂

I hope you enjoyed Mug Monday. Until next week….

Much Love,

Morgana xx
