Book Review- Midnight Caller by N.J. Cole

Book Description

Rebecca Summers enjoys pleasing herself with the curtains open. When a mysterious stranger calls to tell her that he is watching, fantasy becomes reality as she begins to perform for him. Following his instructions over the phone while he watches from afar, she finds herself craving more.

Oliver Durant has always been drawn to humans to exert the dominance and control his kind needs to feel alive. While secretly observing her and calling nightly, he can’t seem to get enough of Rebecca, whom he refers to as butterfly. His urges with her are stronger than the need to dominate, as he is driven to possess her in every way.

Both of their worlds are turned upside down when they finally meet and she agrees to enter into a Dominant/submissive relationship with her Midnight Caller

My Thoughts

Let´s keep this short and painless.

A slight waste of my time.

It´s really disappointing because I expected something completely different when I started reading `Midnight Caller` by author N.J. Cole. I expected a BDSM romance. A well written story that would knock me out of my panties. Well, I sure did get knocked out of my underwear- just not in a good way.

Some scenes were okay- even sexy as hell. But one tiny, little piece of info was NOT included in the book description and that killed the story for me. midnight caller

The moment I found out the Hero was an alien, I actually voiced a „ WTF?“ louder then I intended too. I don´t know about all the other readers who read Midnight Caller, but I wasn´t too extatic reading about an alien dominating. That was, in my opinion, far from sexy. If I wanted to read a sci-fi BDSM romance, I would have looked for one. But I didn´t, so why did I end up reading this book? Because someone forgot to mention the sci-fi part.

I see aliens as creatures who kidnap people at an unholy hour and experiment on them. OR….I just imagine Ridley Scott´s movie, Alien. Remember that scary piece of lump from outer space who used people as hosts or killed them, because…..that´s what aliens do? THAT`S how I see an alien. They don´t screw like Gods. So, no matter how hot the sexy scenes were…..I had such a hard time getting into the mindset I was supposed to go in. I cannot, for all that´s pink and fluffy, wrap my head around that one.

The characters, Rebecca and Oliver did´t do anything for me. Sure, I realized that what they had was supposed to be fantabulous and all, but I felt no connection to either of them, nor did I feel a connection between those characters. I blame it on the alien issue.

I can see why alot of readers loved this book. It WAS hot. It WAS unique. And it WAS out of this world. It was just too out-of-this-world for me. At the end….I didn´t like the whole thing.

If Oliver was a human this story would have been a tad better, but not much .

There is a second book available but I think I´ll pass.

Note to myself: For the future- double check if the book has aliens in it before buying.

Would I re-read this book? Uuhm, nope.

Would I recommend this book? I´m not sure. I´m leaning towards „no“.

The Cover- 2 stars ( The cover is too dark ((both old and new)). It´s not really eye- catchy either.)

The Story- 2 stars ( I can´t deal with aliens. That´s just too far away from anything I like.)

The Characters – 2 stars ( Where to start? Where to end? Totally 2 dimentional. Unlikable.)

My emotional state after finishing this read- Fed up.

I´m giving `Midnight Caller` by N.J. Cole 2 out of 5 stars.

Review- The Knight ( Endgame #2) by Skye Warren

Book Description

The power of pleasure…

Gabriel Miller took everything from me. My family. My innocence. My home. The only thing I have left is the determination to get back what’s mine.

He thinks he’s beaten me. He thinks he’s won. What he doesn’t realize is that every pawn has the chance to become a queen.

And the game has only just begun.

* * * * * *

THE KNIGHT is book two in the Endgame series from New York Times bestselling author Skye Warren about revenge and seduction in the game of love.

My Thoughts

Again- Another fabulous title. An even more fabulous tagline. The content?

Let´s put it this way- I´m still not 100% satisfied or convinced.

`The Knight` ( Endgame #2 ) by Skye Warren, was just as okay as the first book `The Pawn` ( review here ) was. There was a whole lot of stuff happening but nothing that was able to knock me out of my socks.

Think `human chess´, only you know your opponents next move before he even thinks about it himself. That´s how it felt for me while reading this book.

Usually, the first book in a trilogy or series is for the story build-up. Characters are introduced in length, a mystery starts, etc etc. and the second book is all about the story. It´s where the action begins.

The game of revenge and seduction has begun and I saw less revenge and great seduction happening in `The Knight`. I guess I was expecting more. Definitely more attitude from the Heroine ( after all, she auctioned herself off in the first book. Surely, it´s time to grow up? ) or more excitement from Gabriel ( Hero- a.k.a. The guy who bought her virginity ).

The events were, as in the first book, predictable. The ball scene, the time spent with Gabriel  * sigh *, the threat….

On a positive note- I do like the writing. It´s engaging. I like how there´s a great balance between details, storytelling and dialogue. I couldn´t have finished this book within 7 hours ( yes, that´s how I will sit and read.) if the story wasn´t well written.

What I found extremely cool were the motel scenes. From the room Avery occupated to the prostitute next door, to Avery´s bum-like friend, Will. I thought those scenes were far more interesting and exciting. Including a diary from a family member was also a nice touch to the story and did shed some truthful light onto Avery´s family.

Not alot of surprises in this one for me. Yet- I´d still like to know how the story ends. Will Avery find full happiness with Gabriel or will she set off on her own and live life without having Gabriel call her „ My little virgin”? I mean- she not a virgin anymore. Why continue to call her that? It doesn´t make sense.

You know what? I think that´s still my problem. I still cannot relate to the whole losing-my-virginity issue. Maybe I´m also thinking too realistic. Maybe I´m over analyzing the story.

Bah. Now I´m confused.

Anyways- `The Knight` was an okay read. I´m still waiting for the next one because I´m now at a point where I would like to know how the story ends. Let´s keep our fingers crossed for a knock out book #3, which is due in April 2017!

The Cover – 5 stars ( I absolutely love it. It´s perfect )

The Story – 3 stars ( I´m undecided. It´s not good enough to go nuts over yet it´s not the worst story I´ve ever read either. Some parts are fantastic and other parts are not for me. )

The Characters – 3 stars ( Besides Will, my feelings towards the characters haven´t changed. )

My emotional state after finishing this read – Still patiently waiting for the big KABOOM.

I´m giving `The Knight` ( Endgame #2 ), by Skye Warren, 3 out of 5 stars

Carnage- The Story of Us ( Carnage #1) by Lesley Jones

Book Description

I love him, from the instant I set eyes on him when I was just 11 years old I have loved him and nothing will ever change that, he owns me, he owns my heart and he owns my body and no matter how many lies are told, no matter how many people conspire to keep us apart, despite the fame and the distance, we will find a way.

“Georgia Rae, when we made love you used to cry” … He waits for me to sing my bit. I try to swallow down a sob but I just end up singing through it…
“I said I love you like the stars above, I’ll love you till I die”

Carnage is an edgy coming of age love story that breaks all the rules and transcends the decades. Georgia and Sean’s story will stay with you long after you read the final word.
An emotional, smoking hot, gut wrenching read.

NOTE: This is part #1 of a 2 part story but can be read as a stand alone.

My Thoughts

Hands down- This is one of the most twisted reads I´ve read in years! What a complete emotional clusterfuck.

It´s sex, drugs, rock ´n roll & relationships on a neverending rollercoaster ride. A trainwreck that repeats itself over and over again. You want to look away but you can´t. You don´t want to look away, either. You don´t want to witness the characters devastating moments but you have to! You want to interfere and help but it´s impossible.

Be prepared. Due to the language, graphic scenes etc. etc. etc. this might not be for a younger audience. If you´re under age then please go away now.

We meet a young Georgia Rae in the early 80´s and watch her grow with the years. She falls in love with Sean pretty young, loves the soon-to-be mega rockstar hard ( too hard ), and from there on Georgia´s life is one huge mess. A mess no one can fix.

And just when you think life couldn´t suck anymore for the poor girl, something more earth shattering happens. ( I´m saying girl / young woman because that´s basically what she is throughout the majority of the story )

Now, after having finished the story I can truly say I´m an absolute wreck. Even more of a wreck than I was after reading the After series by Anna Todd and that had me thinking for days ( Not that I´m comparing After with Carnage. I´m definitely not.). I really thought there was nothing that could top the mess that book created. `Carnage` definitely pulls the rug from beneath your feet.

`Carnage` is one of those stories where you constantly hold your breath because you just know the author isn´t out for her characters to live happy, fulfilled lives ( I´m dead serious. Only a few characters were able to breathe in peace in this story). I kept wishing, hoping, yes, even praying that the characters would have some happy moment in their lives and at one point they do.

But will it last?

Despite this being sort of a tragic / self-destructive romance I thought it was pretty brilliant. I loved how the author went for a different decade. As a child from that time myself, I got excited everytime details were mentioned ( such as, clothes, hairstyles, cars, etc. ). It was like travelling back in time ( minus the drug use, of course. I was a tad too young for that ). * sigh *

When you get yourself involved with a rockband you won´t get hearts and flowers around the clock. You get gossip, heartbreak ( even if it´s slightly unhealthy…okay okay, who am I kidding- The heartbreak was a disaster! She needed therapy. I need therapy! ), the wrong kind of protection, fake friends, etc. It´s not really pretty.

Never have I seen a romantic relationship like Georgia and Seans before. It was just…wow. Talk about loving someone for life! You love with Sean and Georgia. You suffer with them. Their worries become yours and their happiness makes you want to hug the world.

I refuse to talk about the end. Nope. Won´t go there. All you need to know is that you´ll need a truck supply of kleenex because shit hit´s the fan. You don´t see it coming. Like….at all. When I realized what had happened the waterworks started and wouldn´t stop.

Since this is kind of a „love or hate“ story I wouldn´t necessarily recommend `Carnage`to the world. For readers who love a good wild story with lots of WTH & OMG moments then you´ll enjoy this one. For others who are looking for romances with sappy, clean cut endings..you won´t find it here.

The Cover – 3 stars ( Not really my cup of tea. If I´m honest-I would never have given this book a chance if my friend hasn´t pushed me to read it. )

The Story – 5 stars ( A brilliant mess. Young love, fame, gossip, relationship crisis, self-destruction, love, heartache, drugs, kids, family, life… the author did a great job. LOVE)

The Characters – 5 stars ( * nod * Oh yeah, there was some major loving from my end. They were fantastic. )

My emotional state after finishing this read – far beyond emotionally drained. I cried, cried more and in the end I didn´t recognize myself anymore.

Despite me not liking the cover I´m still giving `Carnage` by Lesley Jones 5 out of 5 stars!
